Outdoor Photography Session - Grotton Park | Portrait Photography Manchester

It was the first real sunny spell of the year and ASP Event Photography was fortunate enough to have a outdoor photography session booked in a little place called Grotton, a small area in Saddleworth, Oldham - in Greater Manchester.

It was a perfect day for an outdoor photo shoot, there wasn't a cloud in sky. We got there good an early so I could have an explore of the area and get some photographs of the landscape around the park, test the lighting conditions and find some nice spots to take some photographs when the clients arrived. I was pleasantly surprised by the beautiful little park that I found there. Here a are a few pictures that I got on my mini adventure -

I met my wonderful clients at the children's play area as we wanted to capture some casual/candid portraits as the children went about having fun on the beautiful sunny day. As photo shoots go it couldn't of been any easier, the weather was great, the area was beautiful and the kids that I was photographing were comfortable and happy in front of the camera and they were very photogenic! The park shoot got some amazing results!

After spending around half an hour photographing in play area we all headed into the park I took some photographs of the kids (and adults too!) playing with bubbles, laughing and generally having a great time!. The sunshine gave me some lovely vibrant images to take away and edit.

Outdoor Photography Sessions | Portrait Photography Manchester...

Portrait Photography Manchester

The outdoor portrait photography sessions that I offer are the perfect way to capture the natural smiles and laughter of the people you you most love! I find that the outdoor locations, be it a leisurely stroll or playing at the park with the kids, offer a much more relaxed setting than a stuffy studio. With no forced smiles and an unlimited number of backdrops the final printed images from these outdoor photography shoots have a uniqueness that will be appreciated for a lifetime.

This Photography shoot took place at Tatton Park in Knutsford, Cheshire. The aim was to capture some candid photographs of Leo as he he was playing and enjoying the outdoors. This portrait photo was taken as he was playing in a wooded area throwing some autumn leaves up into the air. This photograph is a great example of why I love the outdoor photography shoots. His big beaming natural smile is captured beautifully, even his outfit contrasts nicely against the autumn setting.

Love Animals? Pet Photography Manchester...

When I first decided to undertake my venture as a freelance photographer wedding photography was at the top of my list but I didn't want to restrict myself to photographing one type of event. So I decided to have parts of my business in subjects I love the most including event photography, newborn photography, portrait photography and pet photography. Why did I want to be a pet photographer? I often hear that the hardest things to work with are children and animals. And I choose to photograph both!

I choose to do pet photography simply because I love animals, I have always had pets growing up - goldfish, hamsters’ rabbits, birds, dogs, and being a Manchester pet photographer allows me to work for people that love their pets as much as I love mine.

As much as I love all animals, I have to admit that dogs are my favourite! Every dog that I meet has their own personality and I find them to be the easiest to capture in a photograph.

A typical pet photography shoot was at Dukinfield Park not long ago. After meting up with my client and Bella, the dog/model, in Dukinfield Park and having a brief discussion about Bella, her traits, personality, things she likes to do, and what type of photographs that she wanted we set about the park getting Bella used to me - and having a camera pointed at her. It was not long before Bella was in full flow, fetching sticks and chasing squirrels back up their trees!

Getting to work with people and their pet, out and about in the parks of Greater Manchester is the best part of being a Manchester pet photographer. Heading out to Dukinfield park was as enjoyable to me as it would have been taking my own dogs to the park. Knowing that the photographs I produced will bring joy to someone for years to come is a bonus!

A Manchester Photographer - Creating an online presence...

My Website.

Ok, so I need potential customers to find ASP Event Photography. Of course there are newspapers, magazines, local listings that I could look at, but before all that I figured I’ll get a much larger audience by taking my business online. I started off by creating a website. It needed to be a site that would showcase my work and advertise the services I have to offer (event photography, wedding photography, newborn photography, portrait photography and pet photography). I chose Wix to design my site, there is a large variety of templates and the user interface seemed pretty easy to use (this was important because my web design experience is pretty much zero!). For my domain name I chose https://www.aspeventphotography.co.uk/, I was concerned that it was a little long but I went with it anyway. I also chose the .co.uk rather than .com as my target customers would be looking for a photographer in UK - initially targeting areas that I am familiar with such as Manchester, Carrbrook, Stalybridge, Glossop, Saddleworth, Hyde, Duckinfield etc.

I didn’t have to do much reading online to discover that getting ranked and appearing on
My Facebook business page.
Google was going to be quite important so I have spent considerable time researching SEO (search engine optimisation). The first step of this was to get my site up to a standard so that Google could find it. This was quite tricky as the majority of my site was photographs so this wasn’t going to help Google much when it was looking for keywords. Ideally I would want Google and Bing to find my site when people typed in phrases such as wedding photography Manchester, pet photography Hyde, Newborn photography Stalybridge or local portrait photography etc. This was going to be nigh impossible to fill my site with keywords for all the areas I wish to cover. Nevertheless I have put in what I could to at least give me some representation as a Manchester photographer.
My business on Google Maps
After reading on various websites that creating links to my site is important to get  https://www.aspeventphotography.co.uk/ on to Google I decided to create links on as many social media platforms as I could. Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn, MySpace were some of the most obvious but there are many more out there that I was able to create a profile on, such as About.me and 500px. And I still keep finding more each time I decide to have a look! As long as there is a section for me to link back to https://www.aspeventphotography.co.uk/ then I spend some time in creating a reasonable profile. To aid in being found in a certain area I also created a page on Google Business. Time will tell if Google finds me!

Starting my own business ASP Event Photography -How I got here...

For my first ever blog post I thought I would write about how I came to the decision to finally leave my stable yet unsatisfying job and begin building my photography business. Sorry in advance for this post being quite long! I guess this will be the back story that led me to where I am today.

Dovestones Reservoir, Saddleworth, Oldham
Dovestones, Saddleworth.
I have been photographing for quite a long time, almost fifteen years. I grew up in Carrbrook, Stalybridge, a quiet village that is close to Saddleworth and Uppermill, where I spent a lot of my time. There were plenty of woodlands, fields and moorlands that provided me with plenty of places to wander and explore, often with my camera. Landscape photography was my first, and has always been my biggest passion – this is where my love of photography came from. Many times I walked the hills and moorlands around Dovestones reservoir with my camera in my backpack, stopping often to take a photograph of the views. As the years went by I gradually became better at photography eventually even shooting a few weddings as the second photographer for a friend. Those early experiences gave me the confidence to branch out into doing some wedding photography on my own. The images I took from some of those earliest shoots are still in my portfolios today.

The Great Wall of China.
Although I had been photographing for some time I never really considered a career in it. It was when I took some time out of work to go travelling in China that I decided to take it further. I was fortunate enough to meet a good group of people when I was on my travels in China. Always seen with my camera in my hand they often asked why I had not gone to college to study photography and they encouraged me to do so, as it was pretty clear that it was what I wanted to do.

Eden Project

When I returned home I gave my future a lot of thought and decided to find a college course that would get me a qualification that could allow me to gain access to a university. I decided on a course at Tameside College, based in Ashton-Under-Lyne. I enjoyed college immensely. It gave me the opportunity to try out and learn about so many types of photography that I otherwise would never have known about. I experimented with film photography, pinhole cameras and darkroom processes. Taking my experiments from my local landscapes to the Eden Project in Cornwall, Chicago and the Smokey Mountains in the United States. I also got the opportunity to spend some serious time in the studio – this was incredibly valuable time, learning about studio lighting for product photography or portrait shoots was a skill that I would need if I was to forge a career as a photographer. After two years I left Tameside College with a Btec National Diploma with a distinction.

It was a hard decision to make – which university and which course to do after I left Tameside College. I had a job, at the time, as a collection driver in Droylsden, a town just down the road from Manchester. So I had to find a university that was close enough to Droylsden that I could make it to work on time. Fortunately Liverpool John Moores University offered a course at Stockport College, Stockport being close enough to Droylsden for me to make it to work on time in the afternoon. University, I found, was a lot more difficult than college for a variety of reasons – the amount of research that was expected to go into my projects, the academic writing that was required, my job and also at this time I was buying a house with my girlfriend and her young son. All these things made this particular time very hectic and as a photographer the thing I was doing least was taking photographs. Nevertheless I left Stockport College with my B.A Honours Degree and was lucky enough to get to travel to Poland and New York during my studies there.

Me and my baby boy!
After I finished my Degree at Stockport College my dream of becoming a photographer was put on hold for a little while. A new addition to our family had arrived in the shape of my little baby boy! This changed some of plans and decisions that I had to make at the time. Rather than leaving my job in Droylsden as I had planned, I decided to work work my way up the ladder and pursue a job in management. I worked for around a year ‘learning the ropes’ so to speak, before I got to manage my own office. Ironically this was the same office in Droylsden that I had worked from for the past ten years. Over the course of the two years that I was managing here I came to realise that it was not what I wanted to be doing. Although the money was great, happiness is best achieved by pursuing ones dreams. So the decision was made to hand in my notice and take my first steps into self-employment as a photographer- creating ASP Event Photography.
